ICD-ITKE Research Pavillion 2013-14 - University of Stuttgart
This project exhibits some very innovative methods of fabrication. The final product is beautiful in it's own right, but the method is the more compelling part of this project. I am still very impressed by what can be achieved with robots even though they've been in architecture academia for a handful of years now.
Instead of describing this project in my own words I'll let the films at the end of this post do most of the talking. I will say that I didn't expect the wound fibers to be so rigid. It appears that the strings have a polymer coating on them that hardens after the weaving is completed. The stiffness of the strings provides compressive strength so that the strings can act both in tension as well as compression to provide the structural integrity for this structure.
